The Fishes

Little silver fishes, darting to and fro.
I can see you shining, as you come and go.
In the bright cool water, merrily you play.
That is very nice, on a shiny sunny day.

Who is Knocking

Who is knocking, knock, knock and knock?
Charlie, Charlie, chuck, chuck, chuck!
Who will open up, up and up?
Peter, Peter, hop, hop, hop!

* Poems are for enjoyment and for pupils to have fun - they can even act them out.

Teaching on Phonics

Dan was a black cat.
He was very fat and bad.
Dan had a big hat and a mat.
He put the hat on the mat.

Pam the sad little rat,
had a ham in a bag.
She sat on Dan's mat
with the hat and the bag.

Dan the cat
saw Pam the rat
on the mat
with the hat and the bag.

Dan took the ham in the bag.

He ate it!
And left with the bag, hat,
mat and rat!

* The 'a' sound in the verses has a short vowel sound.

Phonics in the Language Classroom

As stipulated in the Learning Standards, the phonic approach is to be used in teaching English. This approach shows pupils the link between letters (graphemes) and the sounds (phonemes) they represent. This helps them to develop blending and segmenting skills which are important to help them read and spell on their own.

Key terms used :

Phonemics awareness - the understanding that a word is made up of a sequence of sounds and the ability to pick out and manipulate these individual sounds.
Phoneme - a unit of sound
Grapheme - a letter or a group of letters representing a sound.
Blending - combining individual phonemes to form a word.
Segmenting - dividing words into phonemes.
